I've tried to explain these to my wife as similar to the difference between sprinting across the finish line and hanging out near the finish line as long as possible. I think the key to experiencing "the flow" is to get yourself in position to trigger it, but then to slow way down and just relax and enjoy the sensations leading up to it, especially once you know it's just a matter of time. As I've gotten older, for whatever reason, my release takes longer to build - I mean, I sometimes think I can last all night, whether with oral or intercourse (which my DW would say definitely has its pluses).
