BHRT Doc

Post by OT2R »

This may be a dumb question but how do I find bHRT doctors? Are they usually gynecologists or are they special doctors that treat only hormones? Are they usually considered “alternative” treatment doctors?
If they order bHRT, what kind will they usually order as far as estrogen, progesterone and/or testosterone? Is it Premarin or something similar? Cream, injections, pills? Any feedback is appreciated.

I need a 101 bHRT course 🤦🏻‍♀️ before I see my gynecologist in a few weeks so I know what I’m talking about when I go in.

My wife post menopause had a very dry vagina and it shrank a lot. Even with lube, it was too tight. She went to a lady gynechologist and she gave her estrogen cream. It takes a while to work, a couple of months. Wow, it made a huge difference in her vagina, she is wet and supple now.

OT2R,

Some gynecologists and GPs will administer BHRT, but I think that most do not. You might have better luck with an endocrinologist, though not all endocrinologists administer BHRT. Check their websites. Your gynecologist might have a recommendation if he/she doesn't administer them. Many doctors seem to be opinionated about BHRT. My wife’s gynecologist does not endorse them, though other doctors do.

You can probably find some clinics in town that explicitly advertise BHRT treatments, but many of them charge a LOT for the service. Clinics will also be more likely to coerce their patients to buy expensive propriety supplements that can only be purchased through them.

My wife and I (and some others in this forum) use Defy Medical for BHRT. The prices are reasonable, and the doctor seems to know what he’s doing. We get our labs done locally at a Labcorp, and we do phone consultations with the doctor at Defy. We get most of our meds mailed to us, though I get one through my local pharmacy.

When looking for a doctor, you can rule some of them by asking how much to expect to pay for the first and second years of treatment. The first year will likely cost more because of additional initial labwork. They might say that “it depends,” but I would run away if they won’t give you a estimated range for the following items:
  • Consultation
  • Labwork
  • Medications
My wife uses a cream with progesterone and testosterone in the morning, and she also takes an oral progesterone at night. She was originally estrogen dominant, but I suspect that her natural estrogen has been dropping this year.

Some synthetic hormones such as Premarin and Progestin were similar to bioidentical hormones, but not quite the same. They were patentable, which made them profitable. I think that it was Premarin that had an affinity for breast tissue and I understand that this is why is was suspected to be responsible for a slightly elevated risk of breast cancer.

Wow, Crow, thank you for the breakdown! That was very helpful and gave me an understanding of this whole bHRT thing. I remember the name Defy come up on these boards pop up here and there. I didn’t know there were actual doctors that did consultation etc. That will give me an option if my new gyno is against bHRT or if I can’t find a clinician in my area.

I’ve also read that it’s better to get on HRT earlier rather than later (after years of post menopause) so I’m hoping that since I’m in perimenopause that I didn’t miss my chance to jump on the bandwagon of HRT 😁

Thanks again!

I’d love to hear the ladies on how bHRT changed or didn’t change their lives, the good and the bad. And from the DH, what their wives experiences were.

We have both been on bhrt for about 15 years. Wife is having the best sex of her life. It is a game changer not only for sex, but overall health.

Go to a4m.com. There is a provider directory there. Also, ask a local compounding pharmacy for a referral sheet.

We prefer someone local, but I know a lot of people using Defy. You won't go wrong with that choice.

That’s good to hear it’s working great for your DW! I’m hoping my sex life will only get better as I hit the menopause years. Your experience is giving me hope!

I’ll check out that site with the directory.

I don’t know if this is related or not but my endocrinologist put me on testosterone replacement therapy in the mid to late 90s and I have been on it since. I’m 83, and look and act 70s. I have an orgasm [ejaculation) at least twice a week, sometimes more often.
