Intersex Adoption

Post by Mikimom »

I know this is a long shot but I'm not finding a lot of Christian resources on intersex. My husband and I have been potentially matched with a child with intersex condition. Anyway, I'm trying to find support as we make our decision. Anyone have this condition? Adopted a child with this condition? Or know of great resources on this condition? We do have a doctor looking over our potential child's medical records. Thanks for reading and helping!

Yeah - this is a very uncomfortable topic for church folk. It flies in the hard line stance many take. It is something I have brought up on other discussion groups and christian forums; usually with either no response; or denial that either such conditions even exist, or that they are so rare that they warrant no thought or discussion.

That said, I really do not know what to say except to pray. Get counsel from your congregational leadership. Every child needs a good and godly home with loving parents. If you believe God is calling you to be that family then I say go for it.

To me the biggest issue of this is who the child can blbilcally marry when the time comes. It may depend on the exact type of intersex condition he has.

I was curious how old they are.

I have a friend that is now in his 60's. He was born with ambiguous sex organs. At birth, back in the late 50's. ambigous babies sometimes were "converted" to girls, easier to do I think. He said his mother couldn't decide and left things alone. He said the doctors told her by age 1 or 2, it should be decided and they pushed to make him a girl.

He ended up not getting the surgery and grew up as a man. His sex organs developed enough that he later even had kids.

Not sure this helps, I know something like that would be difficult for the family.

It is good that you two want to open your home to this child.

What type of intersex condition does the child have?
